FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Rory McIlroy Impressive With 1st-Round 68

Rory McIlroy will enter the 2012 U.S. Open next week at Olympic with his game out of sorts, having missed three straight cuts. McIlroy made a late decision to add the St. Jude Classic to his schedule to get some more reps in advance of his title defense in San Francisco. He had a rough go of it last week at Muirfield Village and came to Memphis after shooting a 79 on Friday that left him well beyond the cut line.

Rory had a solid start to his opening round on Thursday at TPC Southwind, going out in a 2-under 33 with a bogey-free first nine. He added two more birdies on his second nine, but came in at 2-under after two bogeys to level out. His opening-round 68 was still one of the best rounds of the morning session, with the wind creating plenty of problems for the first wave on Thursday. While he’s currently tied for fifth at 2-under, McIlroy did hit less than half of his fairways and only half of his greens in regulation.

McIlroy’s playing partner, Padraig Harrington, shot a matching 68 to tie Rory at 2-under. Thursday’s early clubhouse leader is Jeff Maggert. The veteran, who plays on both the Champions Tour and the PGA Tour, fired a 66 to take sole possession of the lead at 4-under.
