Andy Zhang, you old man, there’s a golfer in Florida who wants to know what took you so long to make the big time. Zhang was the darling of last month’s men’s U.S. Open by becoming, at 14, the youngest golfer ever to play his way into the tournament. We’re guessing that Latanna Stone, however, was less impressed than other golf watchers with Zhang’s accomplishment.
10-Year-Old Golfer Qualifies For U.S. Women’s Amateur
Stone, you see, set herself a lofty goal -- to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open by the time she was 10. That was two years ago, and while the prodigy from Valrico may not have achieved that objective, she qualified earlier this month to play in the U.S. Women’s Amateur championship in August.
Stone, who became the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Am, captured medalist honors when she scored a 2-under 70 at The Wanderers Club in Wellington, Fla., on July 13. Such feats are not uncommon for Stone, who has won more than 100 tournaments and who has honed her abilities under the tutelage of swing coach Charlotta Sorenstam, Annika’s sister.
