The final round of the 2012 Wyndham Championship is underway in Greensboro, and a number of well-known names will need to make a move to qualify in the top 125 of the FedEx Cup Standings. Y.E. Yang has been hovering around the qualifying threshold all week, but his chances took a hit with an inward 36 on the back side yesterday. He’s currently projected at 127 in the standings.
Wyndham Championship Leaderboard: Y.E. Yang On FedEx Cup Cut Line, Nicolas Colsaerts Playing For Ryder Cup Spot
Yang started his day with three birdies on the front side to go out in 32, but he dropped a shot on the 11th at Sedgefield. He is currently 7-under and a win this week is out of the question at this point. Yang has struggled a bit since becoming the first Asian-born player to win a major, a rousing victory at Hazeltine, but he’s capable of getting on a hot streak if he can just make it into the playoffs.
Nicolas Colsaerts is another foreign-born player trying to make a move, only he’s playing more for Ryder Cup position than the FedEx Cup. With the European team standings still open until the Johnnie Walker, the big-hitting Belgian still has a chance to play his way on or impress captain Jose Maria Olazabal. Many suspect that Colsaerts will be a captain’s pick, battling with veteran Padraig Harrington, whom Olazabal seemed to indicate was on the outside looking in.
He’s doing his best to stay in the conversation this week, and is even in contention after two birdies on his first two holes. Colsaerts is one of the longer hitters in the world, and he could certainly post a low number to chase down the leaders on this Donald Ross layout. There are some good numbers out there, with Kevin Kisner posting a 66 with the low clubhouse round. Charles Howell III is currently 4-under and looking to match that.
Leader Sergio Garcia, another Euro who’s battling Ian Poulter for the final automatic spot on the Ryder Cup team, tees off just after 2 p.m. ET.
