NORTON, Mass. -- Rory McIlroy got off to a 6-under 65 start in Friday’s opening round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, thanks in no small part to his girlfriend, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki, who crashed out of the U.S. Open in New York in the first round on Tuesday, is inside the ropes this week, and a smiling McIlroy was happy to have her on-site for the second of four FedEx Cup events.

“It’s great,” McIlroy told SB Nation about having the other half of Wozzilroy around to give him a big hug at the end of his round, which put him three shots behind first-round leader Seung-Yul Noh. “Obviously, I’d still love her to be in New York playing, but it’s great to have her here, it’s great to have her support.”
McIlroy said Wozniacki was attending her fourth PGA Tour tournament of the season and noted that the former No. 1 was his good luck charm.
“It seems like every time she comes along, I play well, so it would be nice to get her here more often.”
Wozniacki, by the way, has been picking up a bit of golf knowledge along the way. She even gave McIlroy’s caddie, J.P. Fitzgerald, a bit of grief for putting the wrong club in her honey’s hands on Friday.
“Air-mailed the green at the first,” the current No. 1 in men’s golf said about his opening bogey. “We came off, and she went, ‘Nice club, J.P.’”
