Rory McIlroy has taken the lead during the second round of the 2012 Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. McIlroy backed up his first-round 65 with another 65 to move to 12-under, good enough for a two-shot lead over Ryan Moore as the afternoon wave of tee times now get out on the course. Amazingly, McIlroy’s 65 also featured back-to-back bogeys but a blistering 30 on his first nine set the pace for another low round. The Northern Irishman carded an eagle at No. 18 as he made the turn in 30.

Rory is in the middle of a two-month stretch that could become historic if he continues his streaky play. He’s already added his second major with the win at Kiawah and he’s clearly going to be around and in contention for the final grand $10 million prize at the end of the FedEx Cup. It will all wrap up at Medinah in Chicago for the Ryder Cup. August was a pretty good month for young Rory, and September is already off to a good start.
Playing alongside Rory was American Jason Dufner. The Auburn grad posted a 66 to move into a tie for third at 9-under. Dufner took last week off, needing a break during a busy season and fall that has him right at the top of the FedEx Cup standings. Dufner will be at Medinah later this month and his game appears to be in form.
Phil Mickelson is also hovering around the first page of the leaderbord after carding his second straight round of 68. He’s six shots back of the leader at 6-under.
Tiger Woods, who went crazy with the putter on Friday, is now out on the course and has already picked up a birdie in the first three holes. The morning tee times certainly demonstrated that the soft TPC Boston is gettable, despite its monstrous length. It could make for yet another wild afternoon in suburban Boston.
