Yani Tseng chose a good time to fire her first-ever hole-in-one in competitive play. The former No. 1 in women’s golf drilled an 8-iron at the par-3 15th hole during the rain-delayed first round of the Wegmans LPGA Championship, the second major of the 2013 season.

Tseng, who held the top spot in the Rolex Rankings for 109 weeks, from 2011 to 2013, and was the youngest golfer to win five majors, has struggled to regain her formerly dominant form. A sore throat that the current No. 5 suspected was tonsillitis caused her to pull out of Wednesday’s pro-am but the ace, which got her to 1-under through six (she started on No. 10)-- just three shots back of early leader Morgan Pressel -- will certainly speed her recovery.
It could very well be the spark the former ace needs to get back on the winning trail as well. Tseng, whose most recent victory came at the 2012 Kia Classic last March, posted her eagle-1 and a birdie on the par-5 17th in the opening round of the tourney.
The competition finally got under way Friday after heavy rains washed out Thursday’s entire schedule. With rain still in the forecast for Friday, officials bumped the second round to Saturday and hoped to complete play with 36 holes on Sunday, though a Monday finish remained a possibility.
