British Open 2013 leaderboard: Zach Johnson leads as 1st round winds down

Zach Johnson is back in the lead while Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are currently in the top 10.

The first round of the 2013 British Open is winding down and Zach Johnson is once again leading at 5-under. Shiv Kapur took over the lead late on Thursday, but he’s faltered down the stretch, dropping to 3-under.

Kapur, who is one of 18 players still on the course, made the turn in the lead at 6-under. He birdied six of his first seven holes, but does not have a birdie since. He dropped out of the lead with a double bogey at No. 10, then dropped another shot with a bogey at No. 14.

The course has gotten firmer and faster as the day has gone on, leading to challenging conditions for the late groups. Of the players still playing, Kapur is the only player with a round better than 3-over. Tiger Woods was one of a few players to have success playing in the afternoon. He finished 3-under on the back nine, on his way to an opening 2-under round of 69.

The tough conditions got the better of many notable players, including Luke Donald (9-over), Rickie Fowler (7-over), Justin Rose (4-over) and Rory McIlroy (8-over). In addition to firm conditions and fast greens, players also had issues out of the rough and in bunkers. Harris English was even heading into No. 18, but wound up at the edge of a deep bunker. He was forced to chip out into the deep rough and went on to make a triple bogey.
