Ian Poulter went on a tear in Sunday’s final round of the British Opener, canning an eagle and a slew of birdies, thanks in large part to a new putter he acquired after trolling Twitter for a flat stick.
Ian Poulter lights up the greens at Muirfield with Twitter putter
Ian Poulter lambasted the R&A for their tricked-up greens earlier in the week, but Sunday the European Ryder Cup hero went on a tear with his newly acquired flat stick.
Poulter, the putting savant hero of the 2012 European Ryder Cup team, began the fourth round at Muirfield eight shots back of 54-hole leader Lee Westwood and got off to a ho-hum even-par start (a bogey and a birdie) through eight. An eagle-3 on the ninth kick-started an amazing run of four consecutive threes that included back-to-back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 through 12.
Following a T25 finish at the French Open earlier this month, Poulter solicited his 1.5 million Twitter followers for a blade to replace his Odyssey XG No. 7, with which he beat the bejesus out of the Americans at Medina last fall.
I am sacking my putter, I will use a new putter at the Open. Putter manufacturers please send me some to try to my IJP office please.

I'm not blaming the putter, I'm saying I want to use a new one. Every time I change I've had big success with a new look.

Just some times you just need to look down on something new. And it's time. I holed 2 birdie putts today. 1 was 12" and the other 4"

Poulter rooted around among a variety of entrants and finally made his decision on Tuesday.
My putter is selected for the week. It is an Odyssey White Damascus. Rolling it very nice. Testing over for now. http://t.co/tU4ICJPr72

After a dropped shot at the par-3 16th, Poulter was four back of Westwood and seemed to have overcome his loathing of the greens at Muirfield, which he compared on Thursday to a mini-golf track.
Unfortunately the guys this afternoon will struggle with a few pin positions. 8th hole is a joke, 18th needs a windmill & clown face.
