Before the leaders teed off Sunday at The Barclays, Phil Mickelson birdied five out of six holes at one stretch to move to 8-under and four shots behind co-leaders Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland.
The Barclays leaderboard: Phil Mickelson surges early Sunday
Phil wasn’t on the radar heading into Sunday’s round, but he is now.

Mickelson’s hot streak began with a birdie at the par-5 sixth hole. He then made par at No. 7 before birdies on each of the next four holes. His five birdies through 11 holes already matched his highest birdie total of the week; he had five birdies in his round of 70 on Saturday, offsetting those with two bogeys and a double bogey at the par-3 11th hole.
Mickelson made par at No. 12 after missing a 12-foot birdie putt to break the birdie streak. He’s tied for fourth with Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods and David Lynn. Kevin Chappell, who shot 62 on Saturday, is one shot back at 11-under. Mickelson was 3-under to start the day, nine strokes off the pace.
