Tiger Woods roasts, inducts Notah Begay into Stanford Hall of Fame

Tiger Woods makes the most of his west coast jaunt, taking in a couple of football games, introducing old pal Notah Begay III into the Stanford Hall of Fame, and hanging out with Nike honcho Philip Knight.

Tiger Woods stepped off the football field long enough over the weekend to help induct his former teammate and “brother for life,” Notah Begay III, into the Stanford University Hall of Fame.

By day, during his homecoming weekend to the west coast, Woods donned his signature colors -- Cardinal red to prowl the sidelines for his alma mater’s 34-17 win over Washington State on Saturday, and Raider black for Oakland’s 11th straight loss on Sunday.

For Saturday night’s HoF event, Tiger, ever the fahionista, traded his dad jeans for a sport coat and big, floppy, ‘70s-ish shirt collar (who “scripts” this guy off the course?) and a trip down memory lane that provided a hint about how he earned the nickname, “Urkel.

“Let’s go back 30 years ago,” Woods, a month and half shy of his 39th birthday, said in his opening remarks honoring the former PGA Tour pro and current Golf Channel analyst. “I was nine years old, pretty hip with my Coke-bottle glasses [at a Junior World tourney in San Diego]. At the time I was the only one of ethnic descent playing, and it was a tough and lonely road ... Notah, being the elder statesman at 12, he came over to me and introduced himself. He says ‘I’m Notah Begay, I am just like you, and you’ll never be alone. You’ll always have a friend.’

“And from that day on,” Woods said, “we’ve been brothers for life.”

Woods’ open mic routine included some humorous stories about Begay’s “odoriferous emanation” and “When I ask you for a number, you give it” instructions to his 2000 Presidents Cup partner.

With Tiger kicking off his trip with a visit to uber-endorser Nike, where he hung out with chair Philip Knight, it was a rather busy social media weekend for the 14-time major champion.
