Ted Bishop fired by PGA of America

Mike Ehrmann

The PGA of America on Friday announced that its board of governors voted to remove president Ted Bishop from office, after what it called “insensitive gender-based statements” on social media.

Bishop called Ian Poulter a “lil girl” on Twitter on Thursday, then said on Facebook that Poulter “sounds like a little school girl squealing during recess.”

Earlier Friday, Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee was critical of Bishop on air, saying, “I was surprised he didn’t resign.”

“The PGA of America understands the enormous responsibility it has to lead this great game and to enrich lives in our society through golf,” PGA CEO Pete Bevacqua said in a statement. “We must demand of ourselves that we make golf both welcoming and inclusive to all who want to experience it, and everyone at the PGA of America must lead by example.”

Vice president Derek Sprague will serve as interim PGA president until Nov. 22, when the PGA will elect new officers at its annual meeting. PGA secretary Paul Levy will act as both secretary and vice president until that time.

“We apologize to any individual or group that felt diminished, in any way, by this unacceptable incident,” Sprague said in a statement.
