Golf rankings: Inbee Park, Stacy Lewis, Lydia Ko go 1-2-3; Henrik Stenson moves to No. 2

Lydia Ko earned the biggest payday in the history of women’s golf, but the runaway Rookie of the Year on the LPGA still closed out the 2014 season third in the Rolex Rankings behind three-time 2014 winner Inbee Park and Player of the Year Stacy Lewis.

Meanwhile, over on the men’s side, Henrik Stenson overtook Adam Scott for the No. 2 spot in the official world golf rankings after successfully defending his DP World Tour Championship title Sunday in Dubai.

Ko, seemingly the youngest golfer to achieve just about anything on the LPGA, swept the $1 million bonus and the winner’s $500,000 purse when she was the last player standing Sunday in a four-hole sudden-death playoff for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship. Even before her tap-in par on her “Groundhog Day”-like fifth trip of the day to the 18th hole at Tiburon Golf Club, the 17-year-old from New Zealand learned she had won the jackpot in the inaugural season-long Race to the CME Globe.

Lewis got out her own broom when she cleaned up by adding the Vare Trophy and the money title to her PoY honors. Park retained her spot in the rankings with those three wins, which included the LPGA Championship, her fifth career major championship.

Stenson, for his part, saved the best for last when he claimed his first victory of the year in the European Tour’s final event of the season. His two-shot win over top-ranked Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose in Dubai lifted the 38-year-old Swede from fourth to second, leapfrogging Scott in the standings.

Scott can reclaim the No. 2 slot by denying McIlroy a repeat at the Australian Open this week.
