John Daly shoots 90 after ‘a good 12’ at Valspar Championship
John Daly may have the yips but he one-putted for a 12 on the par-4 16th on Friday at the Valspar Championship.

John Daly won’t be around for the weekend after posting a career-worst 19-over 90 in Friday’s second round of the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Fla.
Daly, a two-time major champion who would dearly love to regain PGA Tour playing privileges, was truly snake-bitten on one of Copperhead’s finishing “Snake Pit” holes, when he carded an octuple-bogey 12 on the par-4 16th hole. Daly’s “Tin Cup” moment, according to the Associated Press’ Doug Ferguson, included a tee shot into the water and two more splashdowns on Long John’s attempts to go for the green.
Add in a shanked 7-iron, a chunky chip shot, and Daly was safely aboard the putting surface after his 11th stroke. A one-putt led the Loudmouth golfer to pronounce it “a good 12,” since, as Ferguson reported, Daly said he had been fighting the yips since last week at the Puerto Rico Open where he finished T49.
Daly shot a 90. But he did sign for a 90. Took a 12 on the 16th hole, but more concerned about the yips.
— Doug Ferguson (@dougferguson405) March 14, 2014 But for a missed four-foot par putt (for a total of 70 for two days of work) on his final hole at Innisbrook, Daly would have signed for a round in the 80s for his 18th consecutive year on tour.
Daly has a streak of 17 straight years on PGA Tour with at least one round in the 80s. So he still has a chance to end that. #glasshalffull
— Doug Ferguson (@dougferguson405) March 14, 2014 Daly, who said he was dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left heel as well as problems with his putting stroke, chalked most of it up to a bad day at the office but worried about a problem he had never faced before.
@bryanp5679 yes never had em before plus plantar fascia in left foot
— John Daly (@PGA_JohnDaly) March 14, 2014 “You’re going to have big scores on holes. That’s just the way golf is,” Daly said. “But when you’ve got the yips, that’s no fun.”
Daly, whose previous career-worst was an 89 at the 2008 British Open, explained what was going wrong with his flat stick.
"It's my head, my hands, and I can't stop it," the popular pizza impresario told Ferguson. "On a short stroke, I get quick. On my normal, long stroke, I come up. Even my legs are moving. I should just go put myself in a straitjacket and try that. I've always been a quick putter, so I should never get the yips. But I got 'em. I got 'em bad."
