Look out! Wild shot lands on Augusta’s 12th tee mid-swing, nearly hits Branden Grace

This is some new form of golf relay, and Branden Grace is tagged in by Sandy Lyle, who’s playing the wrong hole.

Look out!

Branden Grace was standing on the tee at the second hole of Amen Corner, the most famous par-3 in the world. The tee is up and well off to the left side of the 11th green, but not far enough for an extremely wild approach shot into 11 from dropping on top of Grace as he hit his tee shot over Rae’s Creek. Look closely as a ball comes parachuting in to the tee box as Grace makes his swing.

Grace

That’s the ball of 1988 champ Sandy Lyle, who continues to cash that lifetime invite and work his way around Augusta. But that’s got to be a first and a new position for a guy who’s played here hundreds of times.

The incoming interference from an abutting hole instantly reminded me of last year’s U.S. Open, when Carl Pettersson was addressing his ball as another shot came rolling through.

Unlike Grace, who continued his motion unaware of the ball whizzing past him, Pettersson was able to back off before making his swing.
