U.S. Open 2014 leaderboard: Martin Kaymer pulling away

While most players are having a difficult time making their way around Pinehurst No. 2, Martin Kaymer continues to go low.

Although there is still a lot of golf to play, the 2014 U.S. Open is shaping up to be Martin Kaymer and the field. The 29-year-old has followed up a strong first round with an equally strong second round and currently leads by eight strokes.

Kaymer shot a 5-under 65 on Thursday, the best round ever shot in a U.S. Open at Pinehurst. He may break his own record less than 24 hours later as he is 5-under through 14 holes. If he picks up another stroke or two along the way, he could come in at 64 or better. Kaymer is once again putting himself in good position to excel. He’s avoiding issue and taming the challenging greens. He’s yet to drop a shot in the second round and has carded just one bogey through 32 holes.

While Kaymer is well on his way to another round in the mid-60s, the rest of the field is struggling to even manage a round under par. Of the morning wave, Adam Scott at 3-under is currently the only other player 3-under or better on his round. Scott recorded back-to-back birdies early on and made the turn in 33. He added two more birdies on his second nine and is currently even-par for the tournament. While that is good for a tie for 16th place, he’s still a whopping 10 strokes behind Kaymer. If Scott is able to come in under par, it would be just his third under-par round in a U.S. Open.

With the cut line currently sitting at 3-over, a few notable players are in danger of missing the weekend. That includes Bubba Watson who is currently 7-over with just two more holes to play in the second round. Watson has been better on Friday, playing the round at 1-over, but still not good enough.

Here is a look at current state of the leaderboard. A live leaderboard can be found at USOpen.com.
