Bubba Watson called the crowned Pinehurst No. 2 greens “unfriendly” heading into the U.S. Open and it turns out the entire course wasn’t too kind to the defending Masters champion. At 6-over, Watson finished on the wrong side of the 5-over cut line and is one of the notable names not sticking around for the weekend. Jason Dufner, Hunter Mahan and Luke Donald also missed the cut.
U.S. Open 2014 cut line: Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson headed home early
The cut line rose as the second round of the U.S. Open went along, but not high enough to keep a few notable players around for the weekend.
Watson got off to a rough start on Thursday and was never able to recover. He carded five bogeys and a double bogey on his way to an opening round 76. He played better on Friday, shooting an even-par 70, but it wasn’t good enough to make up the ground. Watson bogeyed three of four holes before making the turn, a costly stretch. He never appeared to be overly comfortable with the course setup and struggled to hit fairways.
U.S. Open
Dufner opened the tournament with a 2-over 72. He was 1-over through 12 holes in the second round and appeared to be in decent shape to make the weekend. That was before a very rough closing stretch, however, as Dufner bogeyed three of his final six holes, dropping him to the wrong side of the cut line. Mahan played well enough to make the cut, but is headed home because of a crucial mistake on the 18th hole -- Mahan’s ninth of the round. Mahan and playing partner Jamie Donaldson each incurred two-stroke penalties on the hole after they mistakenly hit each others’ ball. The players realized the mistake on the putting green and were forced to go back to the fairway to replay the correct ball. With the penalty, Mahan made double bogey. Without the two strokes, he would have finished at 4-over and made the weekend.
The cut line was hovering at 4-over for much of the day, but shifted to 5-over near the end of the round. Joost Luiten was sitting at 4-over with two holes to play. At the time, 60 players were 4-over or better. The top 60 plus ties make the cut at the U.S. Open. Luiten ran into trouble coming in, finishing bogey-bogey. By doing so, The cut shifted to 5-over and Luiten himself finished on the wrong side of things at 6-over. In all, 67 players made it to the weekend including amateur Matthew Fitzpatrick, the lone amateur still playing.
