Golf’s longest day is coming to a close, with playoffs for the final spots going on in the Midwest and the two West Coast sites wrapping up their 36-hole day. Here are the results from three more of the smaller, earlier sectionals who will send 11 more players to Pinehurst (update on first three sectionals here).
2014 U.S. Open sectional qualifying results: Corey Whitsett dominates in Houston, Patrick Cantlay bails
Roll Tide! Corey Whitsett’s wonderful spring continues on his home course in Houston, while a past college golf great bails after 18 holes in Maryland.
Woodmont Country Club (North Course), Rockville, Maryland

Woodmont has settled in nicely as an annual sectional qualifying spot, and typically attracts a handful of regular touring pros. This year, Patrick Cantlay was one of the top draws in the 59-man field, but the 22-year old is still battling a back injury and has been unable to capture the form he had down the road at Conrgressional in 2011, when he burst onto the national scene. Cantlay bailed after an opening 78 on his first 18 and did not turn in a scorecard. Here's hoping he gets healthy, because he should be one of the top under-25 guys we're talking about with the likes of Jordan Spieth, Harris English, and Patrick Reed.
There were a couple familiar names near the top of the board in Rockville, and Billy Hurley III is probably the most notable qualifier. Of the four who are through to Pinehurst, only Collins has one U.S. Open appearance. Here are the qualifiers from Woodmont, along with the alternates and those who just missed out on a trip to Pinehurst:

Springfield is a second Ohio option that's relatively close to Columbus, which is overrun with the PGA Tour pros coming off the Memorial. This year, Brian Stuard, who's having a solid season on the Tour, ran away from everybody with an opening 64 that he backed up with 65. He didn't exactly have to grind it out coming into the house. Blayne Barber, who's been playing well on the Web.com Tour, was one of the favorites to qualify but he didn't finish in the red.

Roll damn Tide. Cory Whitsett, who helped lead Alabama to its second straight national title last week, cruised on his home course in Houston. Whitsett fired matching 66s to get to 12-under, and no one else really came close. It's not been a bad 10 days or so, and now he'll play in his first PGA Tour event, a U.S. Open next week at Pinehurst. Here are the results from Lakeside Country Club:
