Bubba Watson lays up on extremely short par-4 just to ‘mess with us’

Bubba Watson lays up on a short par-4 at The Barclays and Golf Channel guys can’t believe it!

Bubba Watson, fresh off his most recent Mea Culpa Tour after acting like a spoiled brat at the PGA Championship, apparently believed he was still in Louisville when he laid up off the tee on the 276-yard par-4 fifth hole in the second round of The Barclays.

“Don’t you feel robbed? Come on, tell us the truth,” Golf Channel’s Nick Faldo egged on colleague Peter Oosterhuis after Watson laid up on Ridgewood’s shortest par-4, one that was just a bit longer than the 230-yard par-3 10th.

Oosterhuis could not have agreed more, going as far as to suggest Watson left his longer clubs in the bag for the same head-scratching reason he boycotted the long-drive competition ahead of the PGA.

“This is just unbelievable, isn’t it?” Oosterhuis opined. “Bubba could have hit a 3-metal, probably gotten there easily. If he’d hit a 2-iron, or whatever longest iron he has in the bag, he probably could have gotten there, but he lays up, just to mess with us.

“Unbelievable,” repeated Oosterhuis, who was beside himself after Watson missed a kick-in birdie putt.

“Wonder if Bubba’s going to get harassed about not going for the green. Some of his buddies might have done that,” he said. “Of course, they expected him to tap that in and they could maybe tease him a little about laying up. But now, wow!”

After an uninspired front nine, Bubba made the turn on Friday at 1-over and was 2-under for the week.
