Rory McIlroy 4-putts from 4 feet, whacks golf ball into a lake at BMW Championship

Rory McIlroy was none too pleased after four-putting from under five feet on a the par-3 12th hole Saturday at the BMW Championship.

Rory McIlroy has added a new stroke to his repertoire -- the one-handed, flat-stick dunk shot, which he executed with perfection after four-putting (one, two, three, FOUR!) from under five feet on the par-3 12th hole Saturday at the BMW Championship.

The world’s top-ranked golfer found the rough off the tee and chipped to some four feet, nine inches from the pin and then -- well, watch for yourself:

“That is four. Putts,” Captain Obvious, NBC’s Johnny Miller, whose own struggles with the blade were legendary, stated with due deliberation for those without access to an abacus.

Rory, as one might expect, was not pleased with his triple-bogey performance. At least he needed just one whack with the putter to smack the offending orb into the green-side hazard, where it now sleeps with the fishes -- not unlike the ball he tossed into a pond last week at the Deutsche Bank Championship after hitting a ball backwards in a bunker.

But McIlroy’s not a four-time major champion for nothing. He bounced right back with a one-putt birdie on the 13th, though a bogey on the next par-3, the 16th, erased that benefit.

Needless to say, McIlroy’s triple shocked, and at the same time delighted, weekend warriors who have never, ever four-jacked greens at their local munis. Then again, none of them is golf’s No. 1.

McIlroy finished up his not-so-stellar third round with a 2-over 72 and will head into Sunday’s finale at 4-under for the week -- nine shots back of 54-hole leader Billy Horschel.
