Well, that quickly lost some steam. The most anticipated Phoenix Open in more than a decade now heads to the weekend without Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and with more rain in the forecast. That’s not exactly how tournament organizers drew it up, with Saturday consistently being the highest attended round of the tournament.

The Phoenix Open marches on without Tiger and Phil. Here’s your third round viewing guide.
Woods, of course, bombed his way out of Phoenix in spectacular fashion. After shooting a career-worst 82 in the second round, the 14-time major winner said he was not going to hang around for the Super Bowl, opting to get on a plane and go home before having to fly back across the country to Torrey Pines.
Tiger could use a couple days away from the crowds and the cameras after that stunning and embarrassing two-day stay at TPC Scottsdale. We have no idea where this is going with Tiger, but it’s clear he’s had a mental break when it comes to the basic task of chipping a golf ball. Whether it’s the yips or some momentary implosion, Tiger has no chance at playing competitive golf in any tournament, such as the Phoenix Open at the easier TPC Scottsdale, if he can’t or refuses to hit those shots. Unfortunately for him, the carnage and sadness played out in front of the cameras. He’s always going to have his every shot recorded and it was uncomfortable to watch. Here’s hoping he gets some quick fix for it before we start it all over again at Torrey on Thursday.
With Tiger and Phil gone, the headliner in Phoenix is probably Bubba Watson, who should have won this event last year. Bubba is currently T4 and should have a late afternoon tee time and get lots of love from the cameras. Jordan Spieth and Keegan Bradley are two other big names relatively in contention and should be featured throughout the broadcast.
This is the first event of the year for CBS, as the season of Nantz arrives. They will do their usual weekend split with Golf Channel, which carries early afternoon coverage of both the third and fourth round before handing it off to Nantz and friends. That will be the arrangement throughout the West Coast swing. If you’re unable to watch on TV, the entire broadcast will be simulcast online by both Golf Channel and CBS. In addition to those two streams, PGATour.com will have their featured holes stream, which is camped out on the rowdiest hole in golf, the par-3 16th.
