Tiger Woods fires hideous hosel rocket during chipping lesson from Billy Horschel

Players who Tiger would never give the time of day to on the range are now giving the 14-time major winner chipping tips at Torrey Pines.

Tiger Woods has officially hit rock bottom with his chipping: he’s now seeking tips from fellow legends Billy Horschel and Pat Perez, who happened to be posted up next to the 14-time major winner on the Torrey Pines range Wednesday morning. The session included that ghastly hosel rocket that scooted along the ground, a stunningly awful shot you’d see from the 30-handicapper camped out at the end of the range. Unbelievable:

Woods, whose short game has been sliced, diced and dissected by anyone with a Twitter account, has apparently turned to reigning FedEx Cup champion Horschel and PGA Tour journeyman Perez for tips on how to stop stubbing and blading his wedge shots:

Woods’ chipping woes are so serious, in fact, that the former world No. 1 even cast his lonely eyes to Perez. The 186th-ranked golfer in the world is known more for his temper tantrums than his short game, but what the hell, Tiger?

Seeking help from his PGA Tour colleagues is not new for Woods, who has enlisted the services of old friend and Ryder Cup partner, Steve Stricker, as his unofficial putting guru. With Stricker not in the field for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open and Woods struggling mightily with what many observers are calling the chipping yips, why not pick up some tips from a young gun like Bill Ho? But, seriously, Pat flippin’ Perez?:

Horschel, who won two PGA Tour events (including back-to-back victories at the BMW Championship and Tour Championship) to Tiger’s 0 in 2014, ranks first in scrambling from 10 yards, 10th from 20-30 yards, and third from approach shots 50-75 yards.

Tiger, ICYMI, finished tied for last place at the Phoenix Open after carding his worst-ever 18-hole score as a professional, an 82, in Friday’s second round.

Woods, Horschel, and Rickie Fowler will play the first two rounds together at Torrey Pines, where Tiger has captured eight wins. The trio will tee off No. 10 on Torrey South at 9:20 a.m. local time Thursday.

Update: Perez denied, on Facebook, that he and others were helping Woods with his short game, but rather just “talking golf, life and Instagram stars.” While ripping the press for its “false narrative,” and quipping that the gathering on the practice range was just some guys rehashing the interception that won the Pats the Super Bowl (“‘Again, I say we hand the ball off to Lynch’”), Horschel begged to differ.

“I was giving him some tips and hopefully it works out for him,” Horschel told Golf Channel. “He’ll figure it out, he’s [a smart guy] and I think we’ve seen in his history that whenever he’s struggled with something he’s figured out some way to recover.”

SB Nation presents: Tiger Woods should just coach himself
