Farmers Insurance Open 2015: Tee times, pairings for Thursday’s round at Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will try to make a cut this week, while Dustin Johnson returns after a six-month hiatus in what should be one of the better winter PGA Tour events.

One of the marquee early-season events tees off Thursday at Torrey Pines and everyone will be watching to see if it can get any worse for the man who has owned this event. Tiger Woods will be right back at it in the Farmers Insurance Open, less than a week after he bombed out of the Phoenix Open in last place and with a career-worst round of 82.

Woods has won this event seven times and also won a major championship at this venue, the 2008 U.S. Open. But that player is long gone, and he resembles nothing like the man who was an overwhelming favorite to win every time he showed up to Torrey. Even the Sean Foley-taught inconsistent Tiger who won here two years ago was an entirely different player. This current iteration of the 14-time major winner is a sad crippled player who cannot seem to make the most simple chips onto the green.

And given the quick turnaround from last week’s unsteadiness, it’s unlikely Tiger got much of anything figured out for the Farmers. On the range on Wednesday, he was seen hosel rocketing a ground ball like some 30-handicap at the end of the range trying to avoid the prying eyes of everyone around him. So it appears a lost Woods will have to play through whatever is going on in full view of the cameras again this week, which will also probably only last two rounds.

Woods will start his tournament on the North Course, which is historically the easier of the two Torrey Pines tracks for scoring. This is one of the few events on the PGA Tour that uses multiple courses. It yields a lot of flexibility and room for the PGA Tour in setting the schedule for the first two days. There’s no need for a morning and afternoon draw, and instead, the full field of 156 players will go out in just a two-hour window. Tiger is set to go on the earlier side of things at 12:20 p.m. ET with Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel. Because he’s playing the North Course, we may not see all of his shots for the first day. Golf Channel and CBS set up most of their equipment on the South Course, which hosts the final two rounds.

The headliner on the South Course will be the hometown Phil Mickelson, who goes out at 1:40 p.m. ET with Jimmy Walker and Bill Haas. One tee time ahead of Phil is Dustin Johnson, who makes his return to golf after a six month suspension and/or leave of absence depending on who you ask. Here’s the full tee sheet for the opening round:

UPDATE: We have the all-too-common fog delay at Torrey. It’s just a half-hour at this point, but expect times to be bumped back again and again if the marine layer sticks around on Thursday.

Update No. 2: It’s now an hour delay -- expect these to keep coming in half-hour increments.

Update No. 3: After the initial fog burned off, the players got in place to tee of an hour late. Then a new fog rolled in and they were brought off the course. They tentative restart time is 2:40 p.m. ET.
