Rory McIlroy replaces Tiger Woods as the face of EA Sports’ new golf game

For the first time since EA Sports created its series of golf games, Tiger Woods is not on the cover. The formerly top-ranked player was replaced by current No. 1 Rory McIlroy, bolstering evidence that the Tiger era is over.

Tiger Woods is out as a PGA Tour contender for an indefinite period. The face of EA Sports’ new golf game is now top-ranked Rory McIlroy, who takes the place of the former world No. 1.

EA Sports ended its 15-year relationship with Woods some two years ago when Tiger was still atop the Official World Golf Rankings. With Woods now languishing at No. 87 and McIlroy securely the world’s best, the new game will be called Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.

As the face of a generation of players who grew up idolizing Woods, McIlroy was hardly a surprise to replace his boyhood role model on the cover of EA’s first golf game since 2013. Observers are touting the change as a way to attract non-golfers to the game.

“I’m very proud and humbled to see my face and name on EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA Tour,” said McIlroy in a statement. “This is a great honor, and something I couldn’t even dream of growing up playing the sport. I really hope people enjoy the game and I’m very glad I can be a part of it.”
