Bubba Watson faced off with Jimmy Fallon in the inaugural “Pie Golf” championship with Mad Men and The Last Man on Earth star January Jones throwing pies in their faces during his appearance on The Tonight Show Monday Night.
Watch Bubba Watson play ‘Pie Golf’ with Jimmy Fallon and January Jones
Watch and grin as Bubba removes his green jacket before taking his hacks, a mulligan, and receiving a mug full of whipped cream and the 2015 Pie Golf winner’s yellow poncho. It’s too bad the boys didn’t give Jones a chance to win the slicker. Check out her swing at the miniature golf course on Sunday’s Last Man episode.
Backstage, Bubba regaled the Tonight Show staff with tales from the tour, like the time his 2-year-old son Caleb, um, relieved himself on Augusta’s ceremonial green as his dad was receiving his green jacket.
Another funny Caleb story Watson shared with Fallon, cracking him up -- after watching his father hold a golf clinic recently for 700 kids, Caleb, carrying two golf balls and mimicking the way everyone else approached Watson, said, “Bubba, will you sign these?” Taken aback, Watson responded, “I’m dad,” to which Caleb, with superb comic timing, replied, “Okay. Dad, will you sign these?”
Fallon, ever the good host, and having heard about Bubba’s preference for pre-Masters burritos, served him his meal of choice from Mission Cantina. After a commercial break, Bubba was still chowing down when Fallon introduced musical guest, Brandon Flowers.
Watson, who missed last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational to attend the funeral of a close friend who died unexpectedly, is in New York to promote the finals of the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship that Augusta National will host the Sunday before Masters week kicks off.
He and 10-year-old Kelly Xu, last year’s girls division champion who will be back at Augusta as one of 80 finalists this year, were scheduled to be guests on Tuesday on CBS This Morning, ESPN’s SportsCenter, and Golf Channel, ending their whirlwind media tour at the New York Stock Exchange.
Watson, of course, hopes to retrace his NYC steps next month by becoming just the fourth player to go back-to-back at the Masters. Jack Nicklaus achieved the feat in 1965 and 1966, Nick Faldo did so in 1989 and 1990, and Tiger Woods 2001 and 2002 was the last golfer to win two green jackets in a row.
The story of how Watson hooked up with the USGA/Masters/PGA of America enterprise is pure Bubba. He was watching the broadcast of last year’s inaugural competition from his Augusta, Ga., hotel room and was so moved that he decided he had to be there rooting for the 88 young athletes.
After he got to the course, Bubba shook the hand of each competitor waiting to tee off. We’re not sure who had the more poignant experience — the kids, surprised to see their hero cheering them on, or the major champion who wears his emotions on his sleeve.
The two-time Masters winner and defending champ was so enthralled with the concept of the free nationwide youth golf-development initiative that’s open to boys and girls ages 7-15 that he tapped himself as the unofficial ambassador for the event. Thus, his stint on Fallon’s stage.
“I learn from these kids, they’re such an inspiration,” Watson told Fallon. “Sometimes in my job, I forget about where I come from and you forget about how great it is to play golf for a living. and these kids they help you remember that pretty quickly.”
And if this terrific, uplifting promo for the DC&P does not make you want to run out and equip the first kid you see with a new set of clubs, well, you should check yourself for a pulse.
