Troy Merritt breaks the face of his 2-iron off the tee at Texas Open

Troy Merritt joined the fun during one of the wackiest days on the PGA Tour when the Valero Texas Open player caved in the face of his 2-iron on a tee shot at TPC San Antonio.

Seriously, fans and players alike will be shaking their heads for a long time over Thursday’s goings-on. The general hilarity included D.A. Points blowing up ShotTracker, Phil Mickelson’s 8-iron breaking in half during an everyday bunker shot, and Aaron Baddeley holing an ace that wasn’t really an ace on a par-four.

And then came Merritt’s equipment malfunction, which resulted in an unintentional layoff on the par-four hole, since his ball traveled some 155-yard off the tee, according to PGATour.com. Merritt bogeyed the hole and entered Friday’s second round at 2-over 74.

And like Phil, who’s a diehard Callaway guy, Merritt’s standing by his sticks.
