Jordan Spieth, making just his second Masters appearance, was the star at Augusta on Thursday, but as the Masters moves to the second round, the attention will be on what he can do for an encore. Spieth is sitting pretty after 18 holes with a healthy three-stroke lead over the field. Holding the first round lead, however, doesn’t often lead to walking away with the green jacket. Only Trevor Immelman in 2008 has held a share of the lead after the first 18 holes and gone on to win the Masters since 1985.
Masters 2015 live stream: How to watch Friday’s round live online
Once again there will be a few streams and a television simulcast to follow along with the Masters.
History is definitely not on Spieth’s side. In addition to the challenge of going wire-to-wire, Spieth would also be the second-youngest player to ever win at Augusta and only the fourth player to do it on his second Masters appearances. There is a long way to go, before Spieth challenges history. First, he will need to follow a great first round with at least an adequate showing on Friday. He will be one of the players teeing off in the morning, which should be the more favorable conditions. The possibility of rain increases as the day goes on, so it appears playing early will be an advantage.
Several other players challenging for the lead will also tee off early. Jason Day ripped off five straight birdies to surge up the leaderboard at the end of Thursday. He sits in a tie for second place and will be among the morning wave. Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia also have early tee times. Els is tied for second while Garcia is in a tie for sixth at 4-under.
Tiger Woods has ground to make up if he’s going to be a factor or even make the weekend. Woods returned after an extended absence from competitive golf to post a 1-over Round of 73. It was a better effort than some expected from the 14-time major champion, but he still had plenty of issues. Surprisingly, his short game was not a major problem as he chipped much better than he did before taking time off to work on his game. Woods will also be among the morning wave, with a 10:30 a.m. tee time.
Coverage will once again be limited due to Augusta National restrictions, but viewers can catch a little more of the action with a few online streams. ESPN will provide television coverage from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET with a simulcast of the broadcast available via WatchESPN. Masters.com and CBSSports.com will have a few live streams, including coverage of Nos. 15 and 16, and a stream dedicated to Amen Corner. There will also be two featured group streams with Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy among the players being featured.
