Jordan Spieth was a popular betting favorite to win the 2015 Masters heading into the tournament. After he shot a blistering 8-under round of 64, his odds have only increased. Spieth is now the overwhelming favorite to win at Augusta with 7/4 odds, according to Bovada.
Masters 2015 odds: Jordan Spieth now the favorite to win at Augusta National
Following a dominant first round, Jordan Spieth is favored to claim the green jacket.
Spieth was a 9/1 favorite prior to Thursday, the second best odds behind Rory McIlroy. When you shoot a 64 and take a three-shot lead, your odds improve quite a bit. Spieth is favored by a comfortable margin over Jason Day, who has the second-best odds at 5/1. Day didn’t quite catch fire like Spieth did, but for a stretch, he was playing just as well. That included a stretch of five straight birdies and seven on the day. He’s tied for second at 5-under. With his history of playing well in major tournaments, including at Augusta, the first round was a great sign for his chances.
Coming off his dominant stretch to close last season that saw him win the British Open and the PGA Championship, McIlroy entered as a heavy favorite to complete the career grand slam. Oddsmakers pegged him as an 11/2 prior to the first round. He struggled to get in much of a rhythm during the opening 18 and finished with a 1-under round of 71. Despite being seven strokes off the pace, his chances didn’t drop that far, according to oddsmakers. McIlroy is a 10/1 favorite heading into the second round, the third best odds.
Defending champion Bubba Watson is also 1-under through the first round. His odds sit at 20/1, and Phil Mickelson is 25/1 after posting a 2-under 70 on Thursday. Tiger Woods saw his odds drop substantially despite playing better than some expected. Having not played since early February due to the need to take time off to fix his game, not many were expecting him to contend. His short game was much better than it was in February, but he could still only muster a 1-over round of 73. His odds to win dropped from 28/1 before teeing off to 55/1 now.
