Jordan Spieth threatening Masters records with continued assault on Augusta

It’s only lunchtime on Friday at Augusta National, but Jordan Spieth is coming for all the Masters scoring records. Backing up his opening round 8-under 64, Spieth is carving up Augusta again on Friday. He made five birdies through his first 10 holes on Thursday, and he’s added four more in that stretch in the second round.

Spieth was the hottest player in the world coming into the Masters, but the way he’s running away from everyone right now could be historic. Spieth picked up his first red number at the easier par-5 second, then got to double digits under-par at the 5th -- just 23 holes into the tournament. While the putter has been his best club during this stretch, he’s also hitting several shots where he doesn’t even need to worry about that club. This is the kind of approach, at the 8th hole, that has to be deflating for the rest of the field.

The putter is still working too, and he poured one in at the 10th hole to walk to Amen Corner an absurd 12-under par through his first 28 holes.

Since 1985, only one player has won the green jacket after holding the first round lead. But the way Spieth is not letting up, he should go to the weekend with a comfortable multi-shot lead. He’s currently five shots clear of the field.

At 12-under, he needs only two more birdies (barring no bogeys) to set a 36-hole Masters record. Ray Floyd holds the current record, a 13-under 131, which he set back in 1976. Other records that could come in to play later in the weekend: Tiger’s overall scoring record of 18-under 270 and Phil Mickelson’s record of 25 birdies (Spieth already has 13 with 44 more holes to go).
