Winning the Masters is the top career goal for a number of players on the PGA Tour. The title of Masters champion is arguably the most prestigious in golf and it comes with several perks, including access to the champions locker room and a green jacket. There is also a very large payday attached, and this year it will be the largest in Masters history.
The 2015 Masters purse was bumped to $10 million according to the Augusta Chronicle, that’s up $1 million from last year and $2 million from 2013. The winner’s share got a significant jump with the increased purse, and whoever wins the green jacket this year will take home $1.8 million. That purse is now in line with the biggest paydays of the season, matching what the winners at the Players Championship and PGA Championship receive. The purse is so rich that a solo second-place finish is also worth more than $1 million.
Jordan Spieth is attempting to become the fifth player in Masters history to complete a wire-to-wire victory. Despite being just 21 years old, Spieth is already extremely well accomplished with more than $12 million in career worldwide on-course earnings. Holding on to win the Masters would give him the first major championship of his career. It would also be by far the biggest payday of his career and take his career worldwide on-course earnings to more than $14 million. The Masters is proving to be a very lucrative tournament for Spieth. In his first appearance at Augusta last season, Spieth finished tied for second and took home $792,000. A victory this year would give him two-year earnings of nearly $2.6 million. Spieth is currently in the midst of a very lucrative stretch in his career. He entered the Masters with a victory and two second-place finishes in his last three events, and he made $2.31 million for his efforts in those three tournaments. A Masters victory would give him $4.1 million in on-course earnings in just the last month.
While the winner will walk away with the biggest payday, the Masters will be a lucrative event for all of the top finishers. Ties will ultimately factor heavily into the final payouts, but the top 11 spots all come with a prize of at least $250,000. The top 23 spots earn at least six figures, and depending on how many players tie near the top of the leaderboard, three or even four players could win more than $500,000.
