Rory McIlroy will jet to Mayweather-Pacquiao fight in midst of Match Play championship

If Rory McIlroy makes it to Sunday’s semifinals of Match Play, he’ll take on his opponent after spending Saturday night in Las Vegas at the Mayweather-Pacquiao Fight of the Century.

Whether or not Rory McIlroy makes it past the quarterfinals of this week’s Match Play event in San Francisco, the world No. 1 will hop on his private jet and zip over to Las Vegas to be one of the A-listers ringside for the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao Fight of the Century.

McIlroy is the top seed in the WGC-Cadillac Match Play event at Harding Park, and will have his own fight on his hands with the three guys allotted to his pod in the newly formatted competition that starts with round-robin group play. But Brandt Snedeker, Jason Dufner and Billy Horschel may be the undercard to the 1,140-mile round-trip itinerary Rory has planned before Sunday morning’s semis, according to the Daily Mail.

And that’s after McIlroy will have played two matches on Saturday -- assuming he makes it to the single-elimination portion of the program. So that could be 36 holes on Saturday, fight night in Vegas and then potentially 36 more holes Sunday back in San Francisco.

But what the hell? The wealthy four-time major champion can celebrate his birthday any way he darn pleases (he’ll turn 26 on May 4), and rolling out of bed and racing to the first tee is kind of his thing.

Just ask Keegan Bradley, who was on the losing end of his singles match at the 2012 Ryder Cup after McIlroy overslept and nearly missed his tee time.

Another interesting side note to the trip for McIlroy, a rabid fan of many sports -- he met his ex-fiancee Caroline Wozniacki at the David Haye-Wladimir Klitschko fight in Hamburg in 2011, and thereafter was in the stands for many of her title bouts.

“Fantastic fight!” Wozniacki tweeted afterward. “Also met Rory McIlory, who was sitting just behind me:) Really down to earth great guy:)”

McIlroy broke up with Wozniacki by phone almost a year ago, shortly after the couple had sent out invitations to their wedding. So, there’s that.

This little jaunt sandwiched the night between two days of a potential 36-hole golf is a bit daring, but Rory does what he wants.
