Johnny Miller has his share of fans and detractors, but to legendary sportscaster Dick Enberg, NBC’s brash lead analyst is the best ever to opine behind a mic at a golf tournament.
Johnny Miller is golf’s ‘most treasured’ analyst, says Dick Enberg

Johnny’s so good and so blunt, he reminds Enberg — who has done play-by-play for almost every sport imaginable, including golf — of a certain mouthy tennis commentator.
“The two most treasured analysts we have in sport are [John] McEnroe and Miller because they are so candid,” Enberg said Monday on the premiere of Callaway Golf’s live weekly talk show.
“No filter, no filter at all. He sees it and it goes right to his mouth and says it,” the 80-year-old voice of the San Diego Padres remarked about the winner of two major championships. Heck, Johnny’s so good at what he does he could phone it in from his couch.
“He literally could stay at home, put his feet up on the ottoman, have a monitor there, and they would just go to him on any shot,” Enberg gushed about a guy golf so brassy he has his own Twitter hash tag.

Enberg may hold Miller in such high esteem because he contended that, of all the sports he has covered, golf, by far was the most difficult to call.
“I wasn’t prepared for the shock of calling a sports event where you don’t see any of the action live,” said Enberg, who contributed for many years to CBS’ Masters telecast and other tournaments.
Enberg was the first guest on the 18-week program that Callaway will live stream from its Carlsbad, Calif., headquarters.
