U.S. Open 2015 cut line: Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy in danger of missing the cut

The cut line is beginning to settle and a few notable names need strong finishes to make the weekend.

The second round of the 2015 U.S. Open is beginning to wind down, which means the cut is looming. As things stand right now, the cut line is sitting at 3-over, but could easily jump to 4-over before the round is done. Several big names, including Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson, are a little too close to the cut line for comfort.

After a solid opening-round 69, Mickelson has run into a bit of a struggle on Friday. He’s yet to card a birdie in the round and three bogeys have him at 2-over for the tournament. If he manages to stay there, he will make the cut as the number is unlikely to be lower than 3-over. Mickelson still has six holes to play and any slip-ups could put him on the wrong side of the line.

McIlroy opened his round with a birdie, but two bogeys since have dropped him to 1-over for the round and 3-over for the tournament. Currently, he’s right on the cut number. The top 60 players plus ties will make the weekend and there are exactly 60 players at 3-over or better. With the course playing more difficult in the afternoon, it seems likely the line would dip one stroke higher to 4-over. However, McIlroy currently has little margin of error.

Defending U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer is currently 4-over, as is Keegan Bradley. Both players could make the cut at the line if it moves up a stroke and they don’t improve. The line appears unlikely to move beyond 4-over, and that means Bubba Watson will have some work to do. He’s currently 5-over for the tournament with six holes to play in his second round.

Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler are among the players who will definitely miss the cut. Here is a full look at where the leaderboard stands if the cut were made now at 3-over.
