PGA Championship 2015 leaderboard: Matt Jones leads, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day trying to mount a charge

There are birdies to be had at Whistling Straits and several players are taking advantage on Saturday.

The third round of the 2015 PGA Championship is in full swing as the final groups approach the turn in their rounds. Red numbers have been plentiful on Saturday with a number of players dipping well into the 60s on their rounds. Those not racking up birdies are having a hard time keeping pace.

Matt Jones opened the round with the lead and he continues to sit on top of the leaderboard. Jones is 2-under on his round and now 13-under for the tournament, three strokes ahead of the field. Chasing Jones is a whole cluster of players with 30 players at 5-under or better and 10 at 8-under or better.

Jason Day is among three players tied for second place at 10-under. He’s managed three early birdies, but they’ve been offset by two bogeys. He’s 1-under on the round. If he settles in and starts to avoid some mistakes, he could make a strong charge up the leaderboard. He’s already hit some of the better shots of the round, including approach shots like this.

Jordan Spieth is still within range of contention at 7-under, but he’s yet to make a major run up the leaderboard. That’s a bit of a surprise, because Spieth got off to an excellent, drilling a birdie on his opening hole.

That has been the only birdie putt he’s holed, however, and he sits six shots off the pace as he gets ready to make the turn. Dustin Johnson is also 7-under for the tournament. Here is a snapshot of the current leaderboard. For a live leaderboard, head over to PGA.com.
