Tim Finchem and the suits at the PGA Tour could not have asked for a better set of circumstances for their new subscription streaming service than the opening round of the Wyndham Championship. Tiger Woods, making his first start in Greensboro in his almost 20-year career, posted his lowest round in more than two years and had Twitter buzzing on an otherwise dead August morning.
How to watch Tiger Woods live online at the Wyndham Championship, TV schedule and more
Even at 286th in the world, Tiger Woods continues to be the biggest draw in golf and that was apparent this week when he jolted a lower-tier PGA Tour event to life with his opening round in Greensboro.

As John Buccigross said late on Thursday, this is absolutely the highest the first round highlights of the Wyndham Championship have ever been slotted on SportsCenter. And because Tiger played in the morning wave, the only way to watch this round as it gained momentum was on PGA Tour Live, the tour’s nascent paywalled service.
The highlights began to drip out as Tiger climbed slowly into the top 10 and there was a scramble to figure out just how the hell to watch it all. With not much going on during a sleepy August day at a tournament that would otherwise be overlooked, Tiger’s charge was the perfect boon to drum up interest in this new service.
The paywall can be frustrating for regular Tour followers -- these marquee groups streams used to be free before the announcement to this new service was made in conjunction with MLB Advanced Media. But it’s unlikely that old system would have even sent the crew and equipment to this lower-tier event, so this was an instance where the new service paid off in a nice way.
The interest for Friday’s marquee groups stream will recede in a big way with Tiger pushed to the afternoon, but he may pop up there during the window from the start of his round at 12:50 p.m. ET to the start of the TV broadcast at 3 p.m.
Tiger’s entire back nine, and probably an additional hole or two from the front, should fall in the Golf Channel coverage window on Friday. As usual, if you’re unable to get in front of a TV, there will be a simulcast stream up and running. We may know well before Golf Channel goes live if this Tiger run at a last minute FedExCup spot is for real or not. That front nine will be crucial on a course that’s usually easy but especially so this year due to all the rain that’s softened things up for these pros.
There will be plenty more low 60s rounds posted on Friday and Tiger will have to keep up the pace he set on Thursday. If nothing else, it’s a nice boost in interest for a Friday afternoon round at an event that would typically fall by the wayside in the mainstream sports world.
