2015 Wyndham Championship results: Davis Love III charges to win while Tiger fades

We had a throwback performance and winner on Sunday in Greensboro -- it just wasn’t from the guy everyone was anticipating.

At 51 years old, Davis Love III should be on the Champions Tour battling for a Schwab Cup. Instead, he’s now the third-oldest winner in the history of the PGA Tour and is on his way to the lucrative FedExCup to keep throwing punches with the kids.

Love obviously feels at home at the Wyndham Championship. The UNC product has won in Greensboro twice before, but the last title there came in 2006. He’s had two major surgeries and has had trouble even walking, skipping much of the week-to-week grind this summer. As an assistant Presidents Cup captain this year and a Ryder Cup captain next year, he’s become somewhat of a ceremonial player as he juggles multiple jobs and roles that won’t let him focus solely on his game. It’s not like he has to be out here still on Tour -- Love had 20 career wins and a major championship before Sunday’s charge. But the Wyndham obviously means something to him, and it was Love, not Tiger, putting together the throwback performance to steal it in the final round.

Love made his big Sunday push right out of the gate while Tiger and the final pairings were still getting in work on the range. He opened with a bogey, then proceeded to play the next five holes in 6-under. An eagle at the par-5 5th hole brought him to the top of the board before Jason Gore, the 54-hole leader, got to the first tee.

After that wild six-hole stretch, Love settled down and the groups behind him started to make their own moves and post red numbers on this gettable Sedgefield track. His back nine featured all pars except for the par-5 15th. There, he rolled in his second eagle of the day and that would prove to be the difference for his 21st PGA Tour title.

Gore did have a birdie putt at the 18th to force a playoff, but the ball dipped just below the hole, allowing Love to exhale and stop his warm-up on the range for the potential extra holes.

After those thrilling first two rounds, Tiger slowed down on the weekend and completely stalled out on Sunday. He never really threatened the leading number and then imploded with a triple bogey 7 at the 11th hole. That mess featured a back-to-back shank and chunk sequence with the wedge in his hand, reminding us that those chipping woes from earlier in the season are still in there and can pop up to wreck a Woods round. In total, however, it was a good week for Tiger and for golf. With his season now over, he’s got a few positive swing thoughts to take away and work on during a dead period in the schedule.
