Phil Mickelson tried his backwards flop shot in actual competition
FIGJAM tries his infamous backwards trick shot and fails during the third round of The Barclays.

If the last month is any indicator, the sunset years of Phil Mickelson’s PGA Tour career are going to be more entertaining than any other aging star’s on Tour. He’s tobogganing down fescue hills in $1,500 pants; he’s flossing more than ever and waving to boats for no reason; and now he’s attempting his famous backwards flop shot in an actual competitive round.
We’ve seen Mickelson try this shot, and often succeed with it, during several practice rounds and promotional videos where a fun little trick (or trick-ish?) shot might be warranted.
On Saturday, Mickelson was down the leaderboard and out of contention at The Barclays and caught an awkward lie in one of Plainfield’s bunkers. So he determined what the hell, the backwards flop onto the green would be the best option. It did not work exactly how he hoped, but we’re here to enjoy the effort.
