The FedExCup is just getting started and there’s a month of golf left. But Sunday’s final round at The Barclays will be a farewell to Jim Nantz and 2015’s golf coverage on CBS.

Football approaches, and that means Jim Nantz must leave his beloved golf behind.

With football bearing down and just a week away from swallowing the sports universe whole, CBS is prepping for the weekend transition from golf to, uh, something that might get a liiiitle higher rating: SEC football and AFC Sundays. So this is the traditional splitting point for CBS and the PGA Tour. August is a huge golf month for the network, which broadcasts their only WGC event, the season’s final major, and the first leg of the FedExCup. The Wyndham Championship, which is supposed to be just a bridge tournament to the playoffs, ended up being their biggest non-major weekend thanks to Tiger’s patronage. Nantz didn’t even show up for that one last week but he’s here for their finale in New Jersey. NBC, the Tour’s other main network partner, will take over for the final three postseason tournaments.
Sunday’s final round is set up as nicely as a weekend without Tiger, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy could be. Bubba Watson and Jason Day, the Nos. 2 and 3 players in the FedExCup standings behind Spieth, are both in contention. Day has the co-lead at 11-under and Bubba is just a shot off the pace. Lesser-known names who are in contention, like Sangmoon Bae and Ryan Palmer, also have compelling stories worth watching and rooting for late on Sunday. Bae lost a court battle in his native South Korea and will have to do two years of military service at the conclusion of his season, which may only last another week. Palmer lost his father suddenly last week in a car accident but decided to play on this week in his memory.
