You might think San Diego is the last place on the PGA Tour that weather would impact the schedule. But the seaside Torrey Pines venue at the Farmers Insurance Open is supposed to get battered with high winds late on Sunday afternoon so the Tour made an early call to move everything up for the final round. We’ve seen heavy fog, that marine layer, back things up repeatedly in the morning at this tournament but using two courses before the field is cut down in half for the weekend usually helps keep things on track.
2016 Farmers Insurance Open: Tee times, pairings for Sunday’s final round
High winds in the San Diego area force the PGA Tour to move the final round up on Sunday morning.

This has not been a particularly pleasant week at the Farmers. The wind made things difficult on Saturday and it sounds like Sunday could get silly later in the day. The event has long been synonymous with Tiger Woods, who almost always started his PGA Tour season here and has owned Torrey for the past 15 years. We’re obviously moving on from the Tiger era as a whole, and this is one tournament that will have to carve out its new identity in this new era. It lost a lot of steam this year when big names like Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, and hometown favorite Phil Mickelson, all missed the cut. Add in Patrick Reed’s withdrawal Saturday and there’s not a lot of power left in the field. Dustin Johnson would be your headliner, but he ejected from the top of the leaderboard in the Saturday winds and will start the final 18 three shots off the lead.
Scott Brown and veteran K.J. Choi are your 54-hole leaders at 9-under. They will go out at 11:50 a.m. ET (8:50 a.m. local) with Jimmy Walker rounding out their threesome. Almost no one on Tour has had more success in California, and these first two months of the season, than Walker in recent years. Walker, however, has struggled with his putter so it’s a bit of a surprise, even with his comfort on this west coast swing, to see him right near the top of the leaderboard again. He’d be the trendy pick to edge the older, less accomplished, and more obscure names that surround him on the first page of the leaderboard.
With the schedule bumped up to avoid a wind delay or postponement, the estimated finish is 5 p.m. ET. That’s about 90 minutes earlier than originally scheduled for CBS. Of course, that can all change throughout the day if the weather hits harder or sooner than expected. For the second straight day, they will be in groups of three and off split tees in an effort to get the entire field through the entire round in about a 7-hour window from start to finish.
