Rickie Fowler chips in for birdie to take Phoenix Open lead

With just nine more holes to go at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, here comes little Rickie.

It sounds odd to say given that this is the rowdy Phoenix Open and all, but it’s been a fairly sleepy Sunday so far at TPC Scottsdale. There’s just not been much leaderboard movement and the two top names within striking distance, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, had not done much.

That changed when the final group of Fowler, Danny Lee, and Hideki Matsuyama made the turn. Lee, who held a three-shot lead at the start of the round, opened the door for everyone on the first page of the leaderboard when he made three bogeys in his first seven holes. Fowler struggled to take advantage and shoot ahead, losing balls left off the tee, missing a couple birdie opportunities up on the greens, and stalling out with the rest of the pack.

This chip-in at the 10th, however, changes the dynamic for these final two hours or so and gives him sole possession of the lead. He’s been the fan favorite all week in Phoenix and now he’ll play the last eight holes with a chance to pick up his second significant win in the last three weeks.
