Players Championship 2016 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch Saturday’s round online

After a two-hour delay on Friday night, The Players is in for a long Saturday at TPC Sawgrass with the conclusion of two rounds and a possible new scoring record set by Jason Day.

Unlike the Masters, The Players Championship is a full field event with 144 of the best players in the world jammed onto a tee sheet. That’s 12 fewer players than the last three majors of the year, but about 50 more than teed it up at Augusta. So it’s a logistical challenge to get that pre-cut full field through the first 36 holes when the slightest weather interruption pops up at TPC Sawgrass.

We got such a weather delay late on Friday, with the horn blowing just after 4 p.m. and the players kept off the course for a little more than two hours. That made an on-time finish and Friday night cut impossible so the PGA Tour announced early on that they would resume everything at 9:15 a.m. ET on Saturday morning.

The last groups on the course still have six holes to play, so there’s about 90 minutes worth of coverage on Saturday morning before the cut is made, the players are re-paired and everything is reloaded for the third round in the afternoon. The group still out on the course includes our leader Jason Day, who is at 14-under and has a chance to break the 36-hole scoring record set by his Aussie mate Greg Norman. The Shark set what we thought were untouchable records, posting that 14-under after 36 holes and then adding 10 more to run away at 24-under.

Day talked about those astonishing Norman numbers at the start of the week in his press conference, and now he’s threatening them. The conditions have been benign, but he’s been an absolute machine and has a three-shot cushion with five more holes to finish up on Saturday. One of those is a par-5 and a prime birdie chance for Day to pick up at least one more red number and break Norman’s record.

Golf Channel will adjust on the fly and have early morning coverage of the 9:15 a.m. resumption of the second round, then get back to the normal afternoon schedule for the third round. You can simulcast stream all the TV coverage in the morning for that 90-minute or so wrap-up of round 2 using NBC’s LiveExtra service.
