Tiger Woods, Olympic golf wannabes congratulate Rio medal winners

Rory McIlroy may not have been tuned in, but Tiger Woods and other PGA Tour stars liked what they saw when Justin Rose earned the gold medal on Sunday.

Indeed, Woods, a proponent of golf in the Olympics who would have loved to participate if he were physically able, tweeted his congratulations to all the medal winners as well as each of his fellow golfers who competed in Rio last week.

Woods, who has been sidelined for a year with back woes, was hardly the only golfer impressed by the Olympians’ efforts. Jordan Spieth, along with McIlroy, world No. 1 Jason Day, and Dustin Johnson, the high-profile no shows for golf’s triumphant return to the summer games for the first time since 1904, was likely envious of his colleagues.

The two-time major winner made it clear he hoped to part of the fun at the next Olympics.

Spieth was not alone in his sentiments, as a pair of a next gen of American golfers also chimed in on Twitter.

If McIlroy — who admitted before the games began that he would only watch Olympic sports “that matter” — is still not convinced about the impact the Olympics had on those in attendance, perhaps Sergio Garcia said it best.
