Lydia Ko is not one to lose sleep over, well, anything really. So it was something of a surprise even to herself that the world No. 1 gave up some z’s on Sunday to root for countrymen Danny Lee and Ryan Fox in the finale of the men’s Olympic golf event.

The last time women teed it up in the Olympics was 1900, so anyone interested in following the action back then had to do so via trans-Atlantic radio transmission. This week, you can do so by watching Golf Channel.

“I told them both, I don’t think I’ve ever woken up at 7 a.m. to see someone else play,” Ko said on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s first round for the women on Rio’s Olympic Golf Course. “It was great. I really enjoyed it. We all took a photo together and it just felt like, hey, team New Zealand, New Zealand golfers, we’re representing all of them from back home.”
While Lee tied for 27th and Fox finished T39, Ko is the prohibitive favorite to take home the gold for Team Kiwi. As with all things Ko, the 19-year-old winner of 14 LPGA Tour competitions was not sweating the big or small stuff that comes with being the best athlete in her field.
For sure, the two-time major champion was not worried that she might represent the only chance for NZ gold.
“If we can put an addition to that medal count, that would be great,” said Ko. “But I’m pretty sure we’re not thinking about all the pressure of the Olympics, and just try and enjoy it. If we end up holding a medal, end of the week or end of our last day, I think that’s going to be special.”
“I kept asking my caddie, ‘Hey, I wonder what it’s like to stand on that podium and [hold] a medal,’” added Ko, the only woman golfer playing for New Zealand. “That’s more the questions I think about rather than, ‘Hey, there’s so much pressure on me.’”
