Tiger Woods drove the green of a par-4 and it was breathtaking

Tiger hits a perfect moonshot and then makes the eagle putt as part of another impressive opening 9 at the Hero World Challenge.

You could make this a blinded study — take the golfer away and simply give us the ProTracer imaging and video of where shot finished. We would not even need to know who hit it to be amazed at this moonshot that dropped on the front of the green of the par-4 7th hole at the Hero World Challenge. It was majestic, roasted, and perfect.

That it was Tiger Woods, in his first event in more than 300 days, got the heart beating just a bit faster. But this was breathtaking to watch right off the clubface. I don’t care if we tend to get carried away with all things Tiger, especially at these comebacks. We definitely do. It’s unhinged at times. But no praise of this shot could be excessive, in my opinion.

It may mean nothing for the larger picture and Tiger’s future. I don’t care. Love it and embrace it in a vacuum. Golf Channel’s walking reporter with the group, Bones Mackay, relayed an anecdote about a giddy Justin Thomas struggling to control his excitement while witnessing and playing alongside a streaking Tiger during this front 9.

Tiger took advantage of the perfect drive and rolled in the lengthy eagle putt, falling to his knees to celebrate as the ball dropped in the side door.

Woods went out in 31 for the second time in the last three days, a dramatic departure from the ugly front-nine 40 we witnessed in tougher conditions on Saturday. He’s making noise again in his Sunday red (fuchsia?) and it’s fun to watch. Don’t worry about what it all means in the context of him being “back” or not.
