Johnny Miller learns not to ‘mess with’ Rickie Fowler’s ‘rabid’ fans

‘How do you like that, Johnny Miller?’ a Rickie Fowler fan teases NBC’s opinionated commentator.

Johnny Miller, who criticized Rickie Fowler for his somewhat shaggy finish to his Honda Classic win in February, learned on Sunday that followers of the four-time PGA Tour champion don’t cotton to anyone dissing their hero.

One fan, in particular, got Johnny’s attention with some trash talking aimed directly — and loudly — at NBC’s brash broadcaster after Fowler hit his final tee shot in this week’s Shell Houston Open.

Picking up on the theme, which the same fan apparently initiated earlier in the week in Houston, colleague Roger Maltbie teased Miller about Fowler’s four-shot victory over Morgan Hoffman and Gary Woodland.

“Well, how do you like that Johnny Miller?” Maltbie asked.

Miller, for his part, claimed he had picked up a thing or two about Fowler enthusiasts.

“I tell you what, I did learn something,” Miller replied. “You don’t want to mess with Rickie’s fans. They are rabid.”

Booth buddy Dan Hicks chimed in, reminding Miller he was not “exactly blown away” by Fowler’s Honda W, which he accomplished despite a 1-over 37 in his outgoing-nine and two straight bogeys at the end of his final round.

“He’s got his avid followers, doesn’t he?” Hicks asked.

“He’s a great kid,” Miller responded diplomatically. “Great talent.”

Fowler shared fourth place in Houston, four shots shy of Russell Henley’s winning 20-under score.
