Current Masters cut line: Bubba Watson likely safe, Henrik Stenson on the fence

A couple of major champions are in danger of missing out on the weekend.

A little more than half the Masters field will survive the cut after the first two rounds and live to play the weekend at Augusta National. The cut line is structured to keep safe the top 50 players in the current 93-man field, with extensions for ties and anybody who’s within 10 shots of the leader after two rounds.

That means anyone who’s tied for 50th or better, or anyone within 10 strokes of the low score after Friday’s round, gets to stick around for Saturday and Sunday. At 2 p.m. ET on Friday, the projected cut line was 6 over par.

That included 58 players tied for 50th or better and another 10 who were within 10 shots of leader Charley Hoffman’s 4-under score.

Bubba Watson, the green jacket winner in both 2012 and 2014, is likely to make it. Watson bogeyed five of his first six holes on Saturday and fell below the projected cut, but he made a couple of birdies at Nos. 8 and 9 that put him back in position to at least reach the weekend. Unless he drops three shots on the back, he’s likely fine.

Henrik Stenson, the No. 5 player in the world and last year’s British Open winner, is in a more perilous spot. Stenson was 7-over through 15 holes, one shot back of the line. He’ll need to close with a birdie or have the leader decline to make it to Saturday.

Other notable names in serious danger or outright likelihood of missing out: Jim Furyk, Patrick Reed, Vijay Singh, and Angel Cabrera, who won the Masters in 2009 and the U.S. Open in 2007. Most of the world’s top players at the moment are probably safe.
