PGA Championship 2017 leaderboard: Jordan Spieth stumbles out of the gate

With his first crack at the career grand slam, Spieth had to rally back to finish at 1-over on Thursday.

It took Jordan Spieth a pair of birdies during his final three at Quail Hollow to finish the 2017 PGA Championship’s first day at 1-over 72, five back of the leader. That’s a bit of an inauspicious start for the 24-year-old as he takes his first crack at the career grand slam following winning the British Open last month.

After starting on the back nine, Spieth made the turn at even-par 36, recording a bogey at the start of the Green Mile following a birdie on the 15th hole. His putt on the 12th hole is what everyone’s going to talk about, however. A 71-footer set up an easy par putt after taking a hard left turn.

More PGA Championship!

His score climbed to as high as 3-over following bogeys on the first, fifth, and sixth holes before birdying the seventh and eighth holes to get back to 1-over.

“I didn’t have easy putts, but speed control was a little off today,” Spieth told TNT after his round. “... It’s been a struggle for me this year, my putter. It’s just a setup thing.”

Dane Thorbjorn Olesen leads currently at 4-under through 16 holes. Grayson Murray, Gary Woodland, and Brooks Koepka follow a stroke back at 3-under. All have finished their rounds for the day.

PGA favorite Rory McIlroy took to the course at just after 1:42 p.m.
