2017 PGA Championship TV schedule: Coverage and start time for Friday’s round

Day one of the PGA Championship saw lesser-known pros like Jim Herman and Thorbjorn Olesen stand atop the leaderboard for extended periods. Can a field loaded with golf’s biggest stars rise to the top on cut day? Or will a new star take a big advantage into the weekend’s championship rounds?

Thursday’s opening round proved a harried 12-week renovation was enough to transform Quail Hollow from a PGA Tour stop into a course worthy of one of golf’s major events. Two years after Rory McIlroy ripped through the course with a -21 to win the Wells Fargo Championship by a whopping seven strokes, a longer, meaner track kept the world’s best golfers in line.

Management at the course added four new holes and altered several others, forcing players to start their day with a 524-yard first hole. At most courses, that’d be a challenging par-5. At the PGA Championship, it’s a par-4. Boasting a range of shot-stopping bunkers, it’s a showoff hole designed to prove Quail Hollow is, in fact, major material.

Revamped greens and narrow fairways caused trouble for some of the event’s biggest names on day one. Jordan Spieth, the reigning British Open champion, needed to birdie two of his final three holes on Thursday just to finish at +1. Other top 10 fixtures like Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson also struggled their way to above-par rounds.

That doesn’t mean the top of the leaderboard was devoid of big names. 2017 U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka started his tournament with a -3 that put him in great position as the weekend approaches. World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, at -1, is in a similarly strong position.

The golfers will have more than just the course to tame at Quail Hollow. A balmy North Carolina climate meant sun, temperatures into the high 80s, and humidity so thick you can almost see it. That will only get worse Friday, as scattered thunderstorms threaten to halt play and drain players as they get deeper into their round.
