The FedExCup Playoffs have been a successful experiment. It’s created a system that features compelling golf into months where not much previously existed. It gave us a reason to care a little bit about the PGA Tour after the final major came and went. But more than anything — the golf, the prestige, the TV ratings, the tradition -- it’s about money. This is the great signifier of the FedExCup Playoffs. Cash, lots and lots of cash. Each week at four individual tournaments, there are enormous purses up for grabs, and this comes in addition to the mountain of “bonus” money cash doled out across the entire Playoffs.
Dell Technologies Championship purse: Winner’s payout is $1.6 million in prize money
The FedExCup prize money is the biggest cash game in golf, with mountains of money available over four playoffs events.

The Dell Technologies Championship is the new name for the traditional Labor Day weekend stop in Boston. It’s still the same tournament, just with a new title sponsor. In a few years, however, it may no longer exist. With the PGA Championship’s announcement last month that it was moving from August to May, that cleared the decks for the PGA Tour to push up their Playoffs experiment. The biggest gripe about the FedExCup is that it runs headlong into the first few weekends of football season so, understandably, most of their traditional audience opts for that on the weekend. The PGA moving to May opens up August and the rumored plan is to complete the entire postseason on Labor Day weekend. Now, it runs until the last or second-to-last weekend of September. To do this, it’s also rumored that the Playoffs will go from four legs to three legs and the stop in Boston will be the one getting chopped from the schedule.
For now, however, the Playoffs consist of four events with each boasting a hefty $8.75 million purse. Only the majors, WGCs, and the two tourneys hosted by Jack and Arnie, which the Tour gave a massive boost, have larger purses. The winner’s payout is $1.575 million and once again we’ve got a leaderboard full guys who don’t exactly need the cash. Getting a win and working toward that larger bonus prize, the massive $10 million windfall for winning the entire FedExCup, is probably the larger goal.

On top of the individual Dell Championship payout, there’s also all that bonus money starting to be slotted out over these last few weeks. The biggest prizes won’t be claimed until the Tour Championship finale in Atlanta in three weeks, but the guys further down the standings are already getting their season-ending bonus cash. Even some of the players who could not make the postseason still earned bonus money. In total, there’s $35 million available across four purses and $35 more million in bonus cash.
Only the top 70 make it to the third leg in Chicago, so 30 players are getting chopped from the postseason this Monday in Boston. They will get $75k or $80k in bonus money. Here’s the FedExCup bonus pool breakdown:
