Farmers Insurance Open 2018: Time, TV schedule for Tiger Woods on Friday

So far, so good. We’re back for more Tiger Woods on Friday at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he will move over to the North Course for his second round.

The opening round on Thursday fell right in line with most expectations. Tiger hit some rusty, ugly-looking shots. He had a few great shots. He finished at even-par. And he looked healthy and stayed pain free; the hobble from last year’s depressing comeback attempt was not visible. It was a promising start given the long layoff from competitive golf and the stern test that the South Course can provide for even the best in the world.

Tiger’s even-par round puts him in the middle of the pack, just slightly on the wrong side of a cut line, at T84. There’s obviously a lot of time to move in either direction, and he’ll get a shot at the North Course on Friday afternoon.

That’s traditionally been a much easier layout than the South, which hosts U.S. Opens, but the disparity between the two may be closing thanks to a Tom Weiskopf redesign. Woods will probably need to post a round in the red to jump onto the right side of the cut line and get a couple of more rounds at Torrey on the weekend.

Tiger is set to tee off on the North Course at 12:30 p.m. ET with Patrick Reed and Charley Hoffman. The conditions and weather are supposed to be perfect again, with no wind or marine layer fog delaying the morning start times as has happened frequently in the past here.

The field is at a full 156 players, which is as big as it gets in golf — the final three majors of the season balloon to that size — but many PGA Tour events do not get that big. The two-course rotation obviously permits a field that large even during a time of year with limited daylight.

The tee times can be condensed into a two-hour window thanks to the flexibility the multicourse setup provides. That means the entire field plays at least a portion of its round during the TV coverage window, which runs on Golf Channel from 3 to 7 p.m. ET on Friday. But the earlier side of that two-hour tee time draw, where Tiger falls on Friday, will be into the back nine by the time the Golf Channel broadcast hits the air.

Fortunately and obviously, Tiger’s tee time will be part of PGA Tour Live’s featured groups stream. Unfortunately, if you’re not a paying subscriber, you will not be able to watch his round on that stream. PGA Tour Live is the over-the-top streaming service that now has a couple of full seasons under its belt.

The quality is excellent, and you can get different levels of a subscription that’s not exorbitant, but it’s still behind a paywall. Back when we were still figuring out this whole digital media coverage thing, the Tour used to offer featured groups streams like that for free (although the quality was admittedly not up to the PGA Tour Live standard, which uses the MLBAM tech).

So settle in Friday afternoon, maybe dodge some work, and watch Tiger try to get to the weekend faster. He should be finished up around 5 p.m. ET on Golf Channel, and you can roll right into happy hour. Here’s your coverage schedule for Round 2 at Torrey (all times ET):
