IndyCar driver E.J. Viso, driving a Chevrolet-powered Team Venezuela PDVSA CITGO car, was on a quest to reach 230 mph during his practice laps. He came close, clocking in at 229.537 mph, but he did run the fastest practice lap since 2003. He was given the $10,000 F.E. Harding “Fastest Lap” Award, according to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s website.
Indy 500 2013: E.J. Viso records fastest practice lap since 2003
E.J. Viso recorded the fastest lap since 2003 at Indianapolis during his quest to reach 230 mph.

“I think the car we have evolved from the team from last year has been really heading in the right direction,” Viso said. “We have been testing a number of pieces in the car and I think we have a stronger car than what we began with. It’s all about finding as much mechanical grip as possible and then when it comes time to trim it you should be in a good position if you did your homework.”
On-track activity was canceled at 3:45 p.m. due to weather, but Viso and his teammate, Marco Andretti, believe they could have hit 230 mph if they had a full day of driving.
“I think we would have been over 230 if we had a full day,” said Andretti, driving the No. 25 RC Cola car. “As a team I think we’re quite comfortable with our speeds, but obviously tomorrow is another day and it’s just going to come down to having a good balance.”
Now that Fast Friday is over, Pole Day is next on the schedule. The 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 26.
